Distractions can lead to serious surgical errors

Dec 10, 2012 | Surgical Errors

A new study shows that younger surgeons are more likely to make mistakes when there are distractions in the operating room. For instance, a cell phone or a fallen tray may result in serious errors.

Researchers looked at 18 surgeons between the ages of 27 to 35. They found that side conversations also posed a serious risk for patients. In addition, surgeons were more likely to make mistakes in the afternoon.

"This research clearly shows that at least with younger surgeons, distractions in the operating room can hurt you," the study’s lead author said.

This kind of information is startling. People in New York City expect that surgeons and other medical professionals will work diligently to prevent complications. However, the study shows that distractions can lead to organ damage as well as injuries to arteries and ducts.

Although a surgical error can leave people with major complications, patients who suffer injuries as a result of a negligent physician have legal options to pursue. Victims may choose to file a medical malpractice lawsuit. Although nothing can change the past, victims and their family members may be able to receive compensation through a successful lawsuit.

New York City residents who are the victims of surgical errors would be wise to consult with an experienced attorney. An attorney can evaluate the case to determine the best course of action going forward. In some instances, that may mean proceeding forward with a lawsuit. As we’ve said before, negligent medical professionals should be held accountable for their actions.
