What are some of the top causes of bicycle accidents?

May 17, 2017 | Personal Injury

As a bicyclist, there are steps you can take to prevent a serious accident. Unfortunately, even if you do everything you can to avoid trouble, there is no guarantee that you will make it to your destination without incident.

There are many causes of bicycle accidents, all of which you should be aware of at all times. By keeping these in mind, you can make decisions that improve your overall level of safety.

Tip: Make sure you wear as much protective gear as possible, as this can help prevent serious injury in the event of a crash.

Here are some of the many factors that can lead to a bike accident:

  • Distracted driving. As the name suggests, this is when the driver of a motor vehicle is not paying attention to the road and one’s surroundings.
  • Speeding or other forms or reckless driving. This can include things such as running a red light or failing to share the road with bicyclists.
  • Driving in a bike lane. Many big cities have bike lanes, making it easier for bicyclists to travel in a safe and efficient manner. Unfortunately, some drivers don’t care about this.
  • Driving under the influence of drugs or alcohol. If a person is under the influence when operating a motor vehicle, there is an increased chance that he or she will strike another vehicle, pedestrian, or bicyclist.

Even though there are many things that can cause a bicycle accident, it doesn’t mean you should stay off the road. Instead, you should become familiar with the steps you can take to remain safe.

If for any reason you are involved in a bicycle accident, it’s important to do these three things:

  • Call for immediate help (including an ambulance and police).
  • Receive medical treatment for all your injuries.
  • Learn more about the cause of the accident.

Once you do these things, you can also focus on your legal rights. For example, if you find that the driver was speeding at the time of the crash, you may be able to file a lawsuit with the idea of receiving compensation.

You don’t want to find yourself dealing with the aftermath of a bicycle accident; but if you do, it’s important to know which steps to take.
