BROOKLYN: Sophia Tabachoun Injured In Pedestrian Car Accident By Drunk Driver Identified as Off-Duty Police Officer In Williamsburg

NYPD MAY BE LIABLE IN FATAL PEDESTRIAN ACCIDENT

BROOKLYN, NEW YORK (July 17, 2015) – One man was killed and three others were seriously injured when an intoxicated NYPD cop drove his SUV onto the sidewalk and struck the pedestrian, according to the NY Daily News.

Authorities have been able to identify one of the victims injured in the crash as Sophia Tabachoun. Divya Menezes and James Balchaunas were also hospitalized for their injuries after the SUV crashed. Andrew Esquivel was identified as the 21-year-old that died due to his injuries.

The scene was absolutely chaotic. One person had their leg severely injured and another pedestrian was pinned up against a fence. Witnesses detained the police officer in his car in order to prevent him from running away.

Emergency medical crews rushed to the scene of the accident at Bedford Avenue by North Eight Street in Williamsburg. A family member of one of the victims said that at least three of those that were injured were graduates of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT).

This is not the first time that the NYPD has had off-duty officers get drunk and injure pedestrians. There have been a number of incidents over the years. The NYPD is currently being sued for 90 million dollars after one of their off-duty officers got drunk and injured and almost killed an innocent pedestrian with his service pistol.

This accident could be an outgrowth of the Police Departments lax behavior on alcohol within their own ranks. If that were the case, then the NYPD might be found liable in this instance in a civil suit.

HELPING THOSE IN NEED BY RAISING AWARENESS

Our staff at the RMFW Law Firm were deeply upset and saddened by the tragic car accident Saturday night in Williamsburg. Our thoughts and prayers are with the victims and their families as they go forward. It is disgraceful that an officer charged with serving the public would do something like this. If there is anything at all that we can do for those that were injured as they seek medical treatment or if they have questions about their rights, we would be glad to help 212 697 9280.
