Maternal Infections and Medical Malpractice in New York

Feb 1, 2017 | Medical Malpractice

According to statistics, roughly 150,000 infants are born with birth defects every year in the United States. About 3% of all children born in the country have a major malformation at birth.

Many more of these children show signs of developmental problems with time, e.g. about 6% to 7% by age 1 and 12% to 14% by school age. The leading cause of infant mortality in the US is birth defects, which includes low birth weight.

Maternal Infections Caused by Medical Negligence

Pregnancy is supposed to be one of the happiest and most exciting times in a woman’s life, but the sad fact is that dangerous infections affect many women during pregnancy. These infections often cause babies to suffer permanent injury, and in some severe cases even death.

In many cases of maternal infections in New York, as well as other places in the country, medical negligence plays a role. In some cases, the infection is not detected during examinations while in others, proper treatment is not provided by the doctor. In fact, some infections may become more severe if they are not properly treated as quickly as possible.

Here is a look at some harmful maternal infections that can cause serious and permanent problems for your baby:

  • Chorioamnionitis: This is an infection that affects the fetal membranes, or membranes found around the fetus. Usually caused by bacteria that move from the vagina into the uterus, it can cause infection to both mother and child if left untreated. Chorioamnionitis can result in dangerous respiratory problems or meningitis in the baby.
  • Group B streptococcus: Also known as GBS, Group B streptococcus is a bacterial infection that is detected in a pregnant woman’s vagina or rectum. It can be passed on to the baby, causing major complications including meningitis, pneumonia and sepsis.
  • Hepatitis B: This infection can be passed from a mother to her baby and it is recommended that all women are tested for this condition during pregnancy. A liver infection, hepatitis B can turn chronic and lead to liver failure. If a pregnant woman tests positive for this infection, her newborn baby can be given two shots to significantly lower the risk of a lifelong infection.
  • Urinary tract infections: Commonly known as UTIs, these infections occur as a result of inflammation of the urinary tract due to microorganisms. If it is not treated properly, urinary tract infections can spread to the kidneys and this may result in early labor and low birth weight.
