A 6-year-old boy is dead after a bus crashed into a home in Hempstead, New York. The accident happened late last month around 9:30 p.m. Authorities say a bus driver swerved to miss hitting a pedestrian and crashed into a home where the 6-year-old was asleep.
Eleven people were on the bus at the time of the accident. Eight of those people were taken to hospitals in the area to be treated for minor injuries.
Two brothers were asleep in a front bedroom of the home that the bus crashed into. The 6-year-old was taken to Winthrop Hospital. However, he was later pronounced dead. His 7-year-old brother sustained injuries in the crash. However, miraculously, they do not appear to be life-threatening.
Authorities do not plan to charge the 50-year-old bus driver. They do not believe drugs, alcohol or speed were a factor in the tragic bus accident. The veteran bus driver reportedly honked his horn and flashed his lights at a 35-year-old pedestrian. However, the pedestrian failed to move out of the roadway. Authorities say the bus had a green light.
This tragic accident shows how devastating a bus accident can be. People who are involved in bus accidents are often left with debilitating injuries. Sadly, as this story shows, bus accidents often result in fatalities.
Although authorities say they do not plan on filing charges against the bus driver, the victim’s family may still pursue a civil lawsuit. Nothing can bring back the 6-year-old boy. However, money that is obtained through a lawsuit can be used to alleviate financial burdens that resulted from the accident. In situations like this, it would be best for victims and their family members to rely on the expertise of a personal injury attorney.
